The myth that keeps people from starting

Hi there Reader ,

A few of you replied to last week's email saying you were interested but not sure you were "ready" to join, because you still skip breakfast most days, snack later than you'd like, or feel like you're already behind everyone else. I don't love sending reminder emails, but the Fasting Challenge opens in a few days, so I want to clear up that exact hesitation before it's too late to matter.

Here's the myth underneath it.

Fasting and skipping meals are not the same thing, even though they get treated like synonyms constantly. Fasting is about narrowing the window of time when you eat, not about eating less inside that window or leaving a meal out altogether. Skipping meals outright, especially breakfast after a long overnight stretch, tends to backfire for people with type 2 diabetes. It often leads to a bigger blood sugar swing at the next meal, more intense hunger and cravings later in the day, and for anyone on insulin or a medication like a sulfonylurea, a mismatch between the dose your body is expecting and the food that dose was timed around. None of that makes you disciplined. It just makes your numbers less predictable.

A thoughtful eating window still includes your usual meals. It just moves when they happen, on purpose, instead of skipping one and hoping it evens out later. Think of it less like subtraction and more like rearranging furniture in a room you already own, everything you need is still there, you're just deciding where it goes.

Here's a small win to try this week, no challenge required. Pick one day and eat the same meals you normally would, just inside a window you choose ahead of time, something like ten to twelve hours from your first bite to your last. Don't cut a meal. Don't shrink one down to prove a point. Just notice what it feels like to keep every meal and still tighten the edges of your day. That is the actual skill fasting is teaching you, not deprivation, timing.

What time did your window end up starting and ending on your one day? Reply and tell me, I'm curious what a real range looks like across all of you.

You've got this 💪

Welcome to the Sweet Spot! Your weekly dose of practical tips, real talk, and encouragement to help you lower your blood sugar and feel better in your body, one simple step at a time. Hi there Reader , We've spent two weeks talking about fasting differently than what usually shows up in your feed. Not as a test of willpower, and not as punishment for what you ate yesterday. A few of you wrote in with the same safety questions we covered last week, the ones about insulin, sulfonylureas, and...

Welcome to the Sweet Spot! Your weekly dose of practical tips, real talk, and encouragement to help you lower your blood sugar and feel better in your body, one simple step at a time. Hi there Reader , So many of you wrote back last week to say sleep, not dinner, was the real culprit behind a rough morning number. That tracks with everything I know about how glucose actually works overnight, and it's a good reminder before we go further that this story is bigger than food alone. I want to...

Welcome to the Sweet Spot! Your weekly dose of practical tips, real talk, and encouragement to help you lower your blood sugar and feel better in your body, one simple step at a time. Hi there Reader , I have mentioned to you that you already fast every single night, whether you notice it or not. I've been thinking about that again because my own glucose reading caught me off guard one morning. Nothing unusual happened the night before. A plain dinner, lights off around 10pm as normal, and...
